My work involves making decisions about permits for wastewater treatment plants and water treatment plants for the state of North Carolina.  This process includes determining the quality and quantity of treated wastewater that the receiving stream can accept, using stream modeling, and following state and federal regulations.  These rules include national established limits for water flow and pollutants like fecal coliform, toxic metals, and nutrients.  My unit also enforces the compliance program for all treatment plants that discharge treated wastewater to a surface water of the state.  I love this job because the permits we issue help protect the water quality of surface waters in my state and my role in compliance helps improve and clean up more polluted areas.
