Community engagement at the center prioritizes justice projects that develop students as a future workforce devoted to improving the lives of others. Students learn to appreciate the variety of justice issues facing local communities, the potential of actions to address community needs, the value of social responsibility, and the interconnected nature of human experience and the planet's natural environment.

Please check the Student Internships and Volunteers page to see how you can get involved.

Examples of past community engagement projects:

  • Grupo de Baile: Latin American and Spanish Dance Group
  • Refugee Resettlement
  • World Refugee Day
  • Supporting Local Justice Initiatives
  • Blacks Run stream clean-up
  • Puppies for Peace
  • Mobile Peace Library

Grupo de Baile

Grupo de Baile is a space for self-identified Latinx girls to explore and develop their interest in Latin American arts. The Gandhi Center, along with Scholars Latino Initiative, sponsored the first dance group in the summer of 2022.

Contact Sylvia Whitney Beitzel at swhitnb@gmail.com for information on how you can become involved in the next dance group!

In each session, we:

  • Create a safe space to be ourselves and have fun.
  • Learn a new dance and talk about it.
  • Meet a new dance teacher.
  • Discuss the significance of the dance.
  • Talk about how dance communicates ideas.
  • Learn about nonviolent expressions (dance is one!).
  • Talk about our connection to Latin American culture.
