Big Brothers Big Sisters HRC Harrisonburg Mentor **Must be Pre-Approved*** Big Brothers Big Sisters has been changing children's lives by matching them with caring adults to guide them on a path to success.

THIS IS A 3 SEMESTER ACADEMIC COMMITMENT, not including the semester you interview.

There are two different types of placements:

Site Based: You will visit Little at their school for at least 1 hour a week, spending half your time on academic activities such as reading together, doing flash cards, and more. Then you spend the other half on relationship building activities-work on the computer together, eat lunch, draw pictures, or just talk about your favorite things. The important thing is simply the sharing!

Community Based: Students will be paired one-on-one with a child and spend a reliable and consistent amount of time together per week in the community either sharing a favorite hobby, attending a JMU sporting event, exploring the local library, baking cookies together, running around the park, or anything else you can think of. BBBS really needs male mentors this year!

Brookdale at Harrisonburg Harrisonburg Program Coordinator At Brookdale Harrisonburg every day is an opportunity for Brookdale associates to deeply connect with people in a profound and personal way. For our residents, we provide comfortable lifestyles and caring environments, with opportunities to improve wellness, fulfill lifelong wishes, and stay connected with friends and loved ones.

Mission: It all starts with listening to and understanding the unmet needs of those we are talking with; their hopes and uncertainties for themselves or for loved ones. Then we partner with them to determine a solution designed to help enrich their lives. We believe that growing older doesn't mean the options for enjoying life have to shrink. Our philosophy is that we're all aging, but that should never keep us from living.

Shenandoah Valley Migrant Education Program Harrisonburg Volunteer Tutor The primary goal of the Shenandoah Valley Migrant Education Program (SVMEP) is to ensure that all migrant students reach challenging academic standards and graduate with a high school diploma (or complete a GED) that prepares them for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment. Migrant Education does this by offering year-round advocacy and supplemental instructional services for preschool and school aged eligible students as well as young adults under the age of twenty-two, targeting the students who are most at risk due to their high mobility and/or limited proficiency in English.

Tutors are paired with a migrant student, who they will work with during the whole semester. Tutoring sessions are conducted in the student's home 2 times a week. We ask that tutors spend a minimum of one hour with their session, but some tutors choose to stay longer. Sessions largely consist of helping students with their homework, but some tutors choose to prepare educational activities or games to do with their student as well. Tutors do not need to be fluent in another language to volunteer with us. All tutoring sessions are conducted in English. All students are required to cover the cost of their background check.
