Area 4 Special Olympics Harrisonburg Spring Semester Sports Volunteers Special Olympics Va. provides a variety of services and coordinates athletic events for people with various disabilities.

Service-learners will assist adults with disabilities during their volleyball, flag football, and/or bowling skills practices. No previous knowledge of sports listed is required. Must be able to commit to 6 of the 8 weeks.

There are two different types of placements:

Site Based: You will visit Little at their school for at least 1 hour a week, spending half your time on academic activities such as reading together, doing flash cards, and more. Then you spend the other half on relationship building activities-work on the computer together, eat lunch, draw pictures, or just talk about your favorite things. The important thing is simply the sharing!

Community Based: Students will be paired one-on-one with a child and spend a reliable and consistent amount of time together per week in the community either sharing a favorite hobby, attending a JMU sporting event, exploring the local library, baking cookies together, running around the park, or anything else you can think of. BBBS really needs male mentors this year!

First Presbyterian Church Soup Kitchen Harrisonburg Soup Kitchen Volunteer Help is needed to assist with food preparation and set up. We need people to come from 4:00pm to 5:45pm. Once guest arrive, volunteers are needed to serve food, drinks and desserts. After the meal is served, volunteers assist with table and kitchen clean up. The average meal consists of soup, sandwiches, fresh fruit and dessert. Occasionally there are special meals in conjunction with holidays. Regular attendance has been 40 – 55 guests.

We are committed to serving our community. Our downtown location, along with our fellowship hall and full kitchen, allow us to provide services to the less fortunate in our community. Our Soup Kitchen provides meals every Tuesday and on special occasions to the hungry of our area.

Overcoming Barriers Harrisonburg Mentor Overcoming Barriers is a physical activity and wellness mentoring program for children, adolescents, and adults with disabilities. The program uses a one on one mentor/mentee model and is designed around the concept of "Empowerment".

Mission: The mission is to empower individuals with disabilities hoping to produce significant changes in self-efficacy.

Mentors are 1:1 partners with a mentee with a disability. Overcoming Barriers runs many after-school programs for mentees that are for 9 week periods. We run programs every day of the week except Fridays during the 9 weeks OB is in session. Programs for the Spring semester will run the week of Jan. 26-April 7th. Helping Hands mentors will also participate in the schools during the same time period (opportunities run M-F), and have the opportunity to go longer if they wish. Mentors will need to complete the intake form that provides their availability and then the Director of Mentors places them in our programs accordingly.

Ride with Pride Staunton Equine Assisted Therapy Assistant Ride with Pride is Augusta County's premier equestrian-based therapeutic horsemanship program. The organization provides Therapeutic Horsemanship skills in a safe, supported and socal environment which assists our clients in controlling their bodies, emotions, and actions.

Mission: The mission is to serve those in Greater Augusta County and surrounding areas with physical, emotional, and developmental special needs through a wide range of therapuetic equine activities.

Ride with Pride Staunton 5k Run/Walk assistant Planner This is a non-profit organization that offers equine assisted therapy to disabled youth and adults and community at-risk youth referred through area community service agencies. The agency offers therapeutic horsemanship, anger management groups and image enhancement and psychotherapy groups. It is a partner with People Places, Inc.

Shenandoah Valley Migrant Education Program Harrisonburg Volunteer Tutor The primary goal of the Shenandoah Valley Migrant Education Program (SVMEP) is to ensure that all migrant students reach challenging academic standards and graduate with a high school diploma (or complete a GED) that prepares them for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment. Migrant Education does this by offering year-round advocacy and supplemental instructional services for preschool and school aged eligible students as well as young adults under the age of twenty-two, targeting the students who are most at risk due to their high mobility and/or limited proficiency in English.

Tutors are paired with a migrant student, who they will work with during the whole semester. Tutoring sessions are conducted in the student's home 2 times a week. We ask that tutors spend a minimum of one hour with their session, but some tutors choose to stay longer. Sessions largely consist of helping students with their homework, but some tutors choose to prepare educational activities or games to do with their student as well. Tutors do not need to be fluent in another language to volunteer with us. All tutoring sessions are conducted in English. All students are required to cover the cost of their background check.

Sunnyside Retirement Community Harrisonburg Service-Learning/ Volunteer Engagement The mission of Sunnyside Retirement Community is to add life to years by offering retirement living choices that enhance the physical, spiritual, social, psychological, and security needs of older adults in caring Christian communities. Our community is home to roughly 500 residents who are receiving varying levels of care.

Sunnyside staff work closely together to create mission-driven volunteer engagement opportunities on campus. Wildlife Center of VA Waynesboro Animal Care Volunteer Helping the Center's rehabilitation team feed and care for the Center's
patients. Service-learners assist rehabilitation staff with the patient care by preparing meals for patients, hand feeding orphaned animals, exercising raptors, cleaning cages, etc.

Currently we have multiple wildlife research projects were we will like students and faculty to help us with data collection and analysis. Also we will like to have faculty input in some of the projects with the possibility of adding them as co-authors. The current projects are: - Prevalence of rodenticide exposure in Box Turtles - Use of beef thyroid to promote feather molting in raptors - Prevalence of antimicrobial resistance in wildlife - Prevalence of lead intoxication in Bald Eagles -Treatment of mange in Black Bears - Determination of reference values for intra-ocular pressures in Raptors - Nutritional evaluation of mealworms

Wildlife Center of VA Waynesboro Outreach Docent Service-learners have the opportunity to work with the Center's outreach team with on-site education programs such as tours and trail hikes, and can eventually work with the Center's education animals under the supervision of the outreach department as well. Outreach docents' hours are generally limited to the number of onsite education programs the Center is hosting in a given period of time. (This can range from a couple of onsite programs a month to a couple of onsite programs a day!) Outreach docents are commited only to the onsite programs they have volunteered to help with in advance! Wildlife Center of VA Waynesboro Treatment Team Volunteer Treatment Team volunteers help the Center's veterinary staff and veterinary technicians with administering treatments and performing a variety of diagnostic procedures and analyses. There are Treatment Team shifts every day of the week. We have two shifts each day, one in the morning beginning at 9:00 and ending at noon, and another in the afternoon beginning at 3:00 and ending at 6:00. Treatment Team volunteers are commited only to the shifts they sign up for in advance. Treatment Team members need to contact their team leader at the Center 48 hours in advance if they plan on missing one of their shifts.
