THIS IS A 3 SEMESTER ACADEMIC COMMITMENT, not including the semester you interview.

There are two different types of placements:

Site Based: You will visit Little at their school for at least 1 hour a week, spending half your time on academic activities such as reading together, doing flash cards, and more. Then you spend the other half on relationship building activities-work on the computer together, eat lunch, draw pictures, or just talk about your favorite things. The important thing is simply the sharing!

Community Based: Students will be paired one-on-one with a child and spend a reliable and consistent amount of time together per week in the community either sharing a favorite hobby, attending a JMU sporting event, exploring the local library, baking cookies together, running around the park, or anything else you can think of. BBBS really needs male mentors this year!

Shenandoah Valley Migrant Education Program Harrisonburg Volunteer Tutor The primary goal of the Shenandoah Valley Migrant Education Program (SVMEP) is to ensure that all migrant students reach challenging academic standards and graduate with a high school diploma (or complete a GED) that prepares them for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment. Migrant Education does this by offering year-round advocacy and supplemental instructional services for preschool and school aged eligible students as well as young adults under the age of twenty-two, targeting the students who are most at risk due to their high mobility and/or limited proficiency in English.

The service-learner would be tutoring a student in the Migrant Education Program, in-home, twice a week for the length of an hour during the semester. The service-learner would help their student with language acquisition, homework completion, or any other educational projects they may need help with.
