Shenandoah Valley Migrant Education Program | Harrisonburg | Volunteer Tutor | The primary goal of the Shenandoah Valley Migrant Education Program (SVMEP) is to ensure that all migrant students reach challenging academic standards and graduate with a high school diploma (or complete a GED) that prepares them for responsible citizenship, further learning, and productive employment. Migrant Education does this by offering year-round advocacy and supplemental instructional services for preschool and school aged eligible students as well as young adults under the age of twenty-two, targeting the students who are most at risk due to their high mobility and/or limited proficiency in English. Tutors are paired with a migrant student, who they will work with during the whole semester. Tutoring sessions are conducted in the student's home 2 times a week. We ask that tutors spend a minimum of one hour with their session, but some tutors choose to stay longer. Sessions largely consist of helping students with their homework, but some tutors choose to prepare educational activities or games to do with their student as well. Tutors do not need to be fluent in another language to volunteer with us. All tutoring sessions are conducted in English. All students are required to cover the cost of their background check. |
