As a Computer Information Systems (CIS) major at JMU, you’ll learn how to build and manage the systems organizations rely on to operate, from databases and applications to the tools used to analyze and share information.
Students interested in systems, data and using technology to improve how organizations operate and make decisions often choose CIS. They are typically analytical problem-solvers who are comfortable with technology, communicate well with others and are eager to learn and adapt as new technologies emerge.
The program prepares you to evaluate technology, work with data and improve business processes in areas like consulting, government and IT, where you’ll work with teams to identify needs, translate business challenges into technical solutions and ensure systems support how people and organizations operate.
What you’ll gain:
- The ability to evaluate technology, work with data and improve how organizations operate and make decisions
- Experience working with teams to identify needs and translate business challenges into technical solutions
- Opportunities to apply your skills in the IT Consulting course, where you’ll work with over 25 firms that mentor, teach and evaluate student projects
- Access to a strong network of JMU alumni working in management and technical roles, offering connections, mentorship and career opportunities

"The program has profoundly shaped my professional and personal growth, thanks to a rigorous curriculum that integrates critical skills with real-world applications and remarkable extracurricular opportunities such as a CIS-specific study-abroad trip, student organizations and case competitions.
Support from dedicated faculty, exceptional career resources and a community of peers creates an unrivaled educational environment."
