Secretary, Engineering Ambassadors, Class of 2028
Minor: Math
Why did you become an ambassador? Because I wanted to help foster a community that helped me grow as a person, not only within my major but in all facets of life.
Why did you choose your major? I chose engineering because I really enjoyed Minecraft as a kid. I loved being able to go through the entire engineering design process, without knowing what it was at first. It got me thinking about how things worked, where things could be improved, and more.
What do you enjoy most about Engineering? I enjoy the hands-on nature of JMU engineering. Every class involves some form of hands-on work, and I really like that. Paired with the traditional lecture setting are many labs.
What is your favorite class or project? My favorite class has been Engineering 112, Skills and Decisions. Even though it is one of the first classes you take at JMU as an engineering major, I learned so many skills that I have carried with me throughout my career at JMU.
Who has been an influential professor, mentor, or advisor for you at JMU? Why? Dr. Kyle Gipson. He taught me ENGR 112, ENGR 232, and ENGR 321. In addition to teaching in a way many people understand, he teaches skills that transcend majors. I will carry these skills throughout my life, throughout JMU, and beyond. Any time I see him in the hallways, he is always up for a conversation.
Have you had an internship, study abroad, or research experience you'd like to share? I interned at Donohoe Construction Company as a construction intern. I learned a lot about what the real world is like in construction and how engineering relates to it.
What clubs, student organizations, or activities are you involved in? I am the President of the JMU Outdoor Club. We plan hikes, camping trips, backpacking trips, and more for students of all years. We try to build an inclusive community so people feel comfortable and have a place to relax outside their major.
What is something you love to do outside of class? I love going on hikes and spending time outside.
What is your favorite spot on campus? The field outside of Festival and Eng/Geo.
Describe your JMU experience in three words: Special, Educational, Beautiful
What advice would you give to a prospective student? Learn how to manage your time. Time management is probably THE most valuable skill I have learned. Keeping track of your studies is very important, and the first step is keeping track of your time.
