SEMINAR ARCHIVES (Fall 2020)
The Fall 2020 JMU Chemistry & Biochemistry Seminar Series is going online! Typically, seminar time is an opportunity for the entire department to gather, learn and interact. This semester, we aim to recreate the sense of community we experience at seminars in a variety of formats including:
- Virtual, synchronous seminars. In this format, the speaker(s) will present material live (on Zoom), and students and faculty will log in during the presentation to watch and/or participate. These seminars may include interactions during and/or after the presentation, where participants can ask questions, comment, etc.
- Virtual, asynchronous or asynchronour seminars, followed by synchronous group discussion. In this format, participants will be directed to watch a live or recorded presentation. Subsequently, students and faculty will meet (on Zoom) to discuss and ask questions about the presentation in small groups and/or as a larger community.
Zoom or WebEx links will be posted on the Chemistry and Biochemistry Majors Canvas site. If you are not a member of that site, please contact carankl@jmu.edu or another JMU Chemistry faculty member in advance of the seminar to request access.
Additional formats may also be explored, depending on circumstances and interests of the presenter(s).
Seminars will be scheduled largely during classroom “cleaning periods”, in an effort to avoid scheduled class time. Many of the synchronous events (seminars and/or discussions) will be at 12:15pm on Thursdays, or 3:15pm on Fridays, though other times may also be scheduled. Some seminars may be recorded for later access, if presenters give us permission to do so.

Picture A Scientist screening and discussion Join the department for a discussion of the documentary film, Picture a Scientist. This documentary was originally produced for the Tribeca Film Festival and is being shared by 500 Women Scientists. Picture a Scientist paints a nuanced, emotional but unflinching portrait of the struggles women in science have faced, in recent decades up to today. The film challenges audiences of all backgrounds and genders to question their own implicit biases and move toward change. |
