Academic Success Program (ASP)

Program Outline & Requirements

Fall 2026

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION:

The Academic Success Program (ASP) is an intervention program designed to help JMU students on academic suspension or probation become successful, well-rounded student scholars. ASP's mission is to help students identify their greatest strengths and determine how to apply those strengths toward academic success. The program fulfills this mission by supporting students' academic strategies, professional development, and personal motivation, helping them achieve success at JMU.

PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS:

To successfully complete ASP, you must:

  • Review the Academic Success Program Screening Presentation, which explains ASP and its requirements, and complete both the Academic Success Program (ASP) Student Profile and the first administration (pre-test) of the Strategic Learning Assessment (SLA).
  • Meet with your assigned Peer Adviser (PA) at least three times during the semester, actively participate in designated workshops and study halls, and visit at least two campus resources.
  • During the first meeting, known as the Intake Meeting, collaborate with your PA to identify workshops, study halls, and campus resources that best support your needs and complete a Compliance Plan.
  • Participate in a second meeting, which serves as a progress check-in.
  • Participate in a third and final meeting, which focuses on semester reflection and verification that all program requirements have been completed.
  • Complete all requirements outlined in the Compliance Plan developed with your PA.
  • Complete the second administration (post-test) of the Strategic Learning Assessment (SLA) prior to the final meeting. Bring the results to the final meeting and discuss them with your PA.

ACADEMIC HONESTY:

Upon enrollment, all students are subjected to the provisions of the JMU Honor System. Each student has the responsibility to read and understand the honor code and procedures. All academic dishonesty is a violation of the Honor Code. Students shall observe complete honesty in all academic matters.

The JMU Honor Code is available from the Honor Council Website.

Compliance Plan:

In addition to meeting with your assigned PA a minimum of three times during the semester, you will be required to:

  • Attend two workshops
  • Attend four study halls
  • Visit two campus resources

Workshop topics may include time management, self-care, study strategies, motivation, and professional etiquette. During your Intake Meeting, you will receive the Fall 2026 workshop and study hall schedules. In partnership with your Peer Adviser, you will also select the campus resources that best support your goals.

Completion of these requirements will determine your overall program compliance.

Program Compliance:

The three categories of program compliance are as follows:

  • Fully Complaint: Student satisfied ALL stated requirements within the Compliance Plan
  • Partially Complaint: Student satisfied MOST requirements within the Compliance Plan
  • Not Compliant: Student satisfied LESS THAN HALF of the requirements within the Compliance Plan

An end-of-semester compliance report will be sent to your academic college or to Academic Student Services.

Attendance Policy:

Attendance at all ASP meetings, workshops, and study halls outlined in the Compliance Plan is required. While we recognize that unexpected circumstances may arise, the program is intentionally tailored to support your individual needs, making attendance critical to your success and overall experience.

Workshop and Study Hall Schedule Conflicts

Workshop topics are offered multiple times throughout the semester, and study halls are scheduled regularly. Therefore, students will have several opportunities to attend and complete these requirements.

Meeting Conflicts

Students are required to meet with their Peer Adviser three times during the semester. Meetings must be scheduled through email communication with the PA. If you need to reschedule a meeting, please contact your PA as soon as possible. We understand that schedules can change, and we encourage you to maintain regular communication with your PA and keep them informed of any circumstances that may affect your meetings.

Inclement Weather Contingency:

The Academic Success Program will follow all university guidelines and restrictions regarding inclement weather. Workshops, study halls, and meetings will be canceled only if the university closes campus and cancels classes. The ASP team will also monitor weather conditions and evaluate the feasibility of holding in-person activities.

Should meeting in person become impractical or unsafe, students can expect the following:

Workshops

Workshops may be moved to a virtual format or canceled. Students will be notified through their @dukes.jmu.edu email account and, if applicable, provided with a Zoom link. The decision to move or cancel a workshop will be made by the Peer Adviser and/or Program Coordinator. If conducted virtually, the workshop will occur at its originally scheduled time, and all registered students will be expected to attend.

Study Halls

Study halls will not be offered virtually. Decisions regarding cancellation will be made by the Peer Adviser and/or Program Coordinator, and students will be notified via their @dukes.jmu.edu email account.

Meetings with Peer Advisers

The PA and student determine meeting times, dates, and locations collaboratively. Meetings may proceed as planned, be moved to a virtual format, or be rescheduled as needed. ASP strongly discourages in-person meetings when weather conditions create safety concerns for participants.

Communication:

All communication regarding ASP will be sent to your @dukes.jmu.edu email account. Please make sure to check the account regularly. This email account serves as JMU's primary method of communication with students and is used by university offices and departments. If you experience any issues accessing your account, notify your Peer Adviser immediately.

Cell Phones/Electronic Devices:

To promote engagement and respect for your Peer Adviser and fellow participants, please refrain from using cell phones or other electronic devices during meetings, workshops, and study halls unless otherwise instructed. Excessive, disruptive, or inappropriate use of electronic devices may negatively impact your program compliance status.
