HDPT Buses

The Harrisonburg Department of Public Transportation (HDPT) operates all of the local transit buses at JMU, ensuring students have safe and reliable method of transportation for getting to/from campus, around campus, and to the City of Harrisonburg. All JMU students and employees ride for free on HDPT transit buses. When boarding buses on campus or at the off-campus apartments, it is not necessary to display your JACard; however, when boarding buses in the City, the driver may request that you present your JACard in lieu of paying a fare. All buses are wheelchair accessible and equipped with bicycle racks that can hold up to two bikes at a time.

How to get to JMU from Specific Off-Campus Housing

When classes are in session, HDPT buses serving the off-campus apartments typically operate between 7 a.m. and 11 p.m. See individual bus schedules for more details. Additionally, the Inner Campus Shuttles (ICS) operates multiple buses in a loop within campus. The ICS runs approximately every 5 minutes between Memorial Hall and Jennings Hall from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekdays when classes are in session, and every half hour from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. Inner Campus Shuttle schedules can be found here.

The HDPT also provides a "Shopper" bus that services the JMU Campus along with major shopping locations, including Harrisonburg Crossing shopping center (Walmart) and Valley Mall. The Shopper runs Monday - Saturday 1 p.m. to 10:30 p.m.

If you have questions or concerns about bus service you can contact the HDPT at 540-432-0492 or harrisonburgva.gov/contact-public-transportation.

During home football games and special events, HDPT provides free shuttles from the local hotels and apartment complexes to the Godwin Transit Center next to Bridgeforth Stadium. Shuttles typically begin three hours before kick-off and run until one hour after the game ends. For football game routes and schedules, visit HDPT a week before gameday.
