Greetings from the Staff Emeriti Association!

The Staff Emeriti Association (SEA) is a JMU Human Resources sponsored program and a multifaceted organization open to retired full-time classified employees, who have earned Emerita/Emeritus status approved by the JMU President. This dynamic and fun organization provides an opportunity for Staff Emeriti to continue association with colleagues and to maintain ties to the University through a wide variety of activities.

Steering Committee: establishes yearly goals and plans events.

Committee members: Christina Updike (chair), Jane Beach, Norma Burkholder, Alma Hale-Cooper, Mike Lam, Gail May, Mary Lynne Smith, Milla Sue Wisecarver

Questions or more information, email: staffemeriti@jmu.edu.

SEA website includes:

  • information on our events
  • steering committee meeting minutes
  • event pictures in the photo gallery
  • the Bylaws
  • a link to Policy 1318 - Emeritus Staff. The policy defines eligibility, status, privileges, and nomination procedures for the designation.

Last year’s events included:

  • attending a JMU men’s basketball game with dinner afterwards
  • wine and cheese social at the JMU arboretum
  • volunteering at a JMU CHOICES day
  • distributing SEA brochures at JMU’s Employee Appreciation Day
  • luncheon and guided tour of the new College of Health and Behavioral Studies building
  • joint Holiday Gala with the Faculty Emeriti Association

Today there are over 125 retired staff who have earned the Staff Emeriti designation and are eligible for membership in the JMU SEA. Currently over 50% have attended events or responded positively to being a part of this active group. We continue to reach out and encourage interaction of Staff Emeriti through social events and volunteer activities.  In the future, we plan to develop special interest groups and organize trips to cultural programs.

As more retired staff receive the Staff Emeriti designation, we look forward to growing the SEA and maintaining connections with each other and JMU!
