Hannah Benoit is a music theorist whose primary research explores the application of critical pedagogy to the music theory classroom. She draws from research grounded in critical theory and feminist pedagogies to encourage a more equitable, diverse, and inclusive music theory classroom. In 2023, her dissertation research on critical pedagogy received grant funding through the Fonds du Recherche du Québec. Hannah has presented her work across the United States and Canada, including appearances at the Society for Music Theory Annual Conference, Pedagogy into Practice Conference, and Music Theory Midwest Annual Conference. Her first authored article can be found in the Journal of Music Theory Pedagogy, exploring pedagogical challenges that AI poses to the music theory classroom. Her secondary research area focuses on musical form in Electronic Dance Music, which informs her teaching approach by integrating both popular and classical genres in music analysis. Prior to her appointment at James Madison University, Hannah has served as an adjunct professor at Bunker Hill Community College and Keene State College. Outside of academia, Hannah is an avid rock climber and enjoys spending time with her two house rabbits.
