Director of the School of Music

John Allemeier is a composer of concert music and music for modern dance.  His music has been described as having a “sweet sense of mystery” by Fanfare and as being “rapturous” by the American Record Guide.​

John Allemeier’s music has been performed by Ethel, Loadbang, Hypercube, Boston New Music Initiative, Charleston Symphony, Red Clay Saxophone Quartet, Ebano Quartet, ASSEM3LY, Beo Quartet, Due East, Duo XXI, Kassia Ensemble, Low and Lower, Madison Park String Quartet, the Bechtler Ensemble, Terminus Ensemble, and on venues such as the Resonance Chamber Music Series (Pittsburgh), SoundNOW Festival (Atlanta), Charlotte New Music Festival, TUTTI New Music Festival (Ohio), BOOM Festival (Charlotte), DAP Festival (Pietrasanta, Italy), the International Double Reed Society, International Clarinet Society Conference, International Society of Bassist Convention, North American Saxophone Alliance, Piccolo Spoleto, the Annual Festival of Contemporary Music in San Francisco, the Spark Festival in Minneapolis, as well as national and regional conferences of the Society of Composers and the College Music Society.

Recordings of John Allemeier’s music consist of two full-length compact discs of his music released on Albany Records as well as numerous compositions contributed to other recordings on the Albany, Capstone, and Vox Novus labels.  These recordings have garnered outstanding reviews in The American Record Guide, Fanfare, The Clarinet, The Flutist Quarterly, The Charlotte Observer, Music is Good, and Texas Public Radio.  His music is published by Carl Fischer Music Publishers, C. Alan Publications, and European American Music.   He received his Ph.D. in Composition from the University of Iowa, his Master of Music in Composition from Northwestern University, and his Bachelor of Music in Performance from Augustana College.  He has studied in Europe at the 41st and 42nd Internationalen Ferienkurse für Neue Musik in Darmstadt, Germany, and the 6th International Composition Course in Cesky Krumlov, Czech Republic.
