Girls' Math and Coding Day at JMU

Girls' Math and Coding Day at JMU is an NSF-funded event for local female high school students. During this half-day event, students attend a math and coding workshop at JMU as well as several talks by JMU Mathematics and Statistics faculty and students. The high school students also interact with JMU students and faculty over lunch at D-Hall. Not only do the students enjoy learning math and coding, they also enjoy the half-day college experience on JMU campus.

The first Girls' Math and Coding Day at JMU was held in Spring 2020, where20 students from the Harrisonburg High School AVID program attended.

For the second event in Spring 2022, we increased the number of participants to 36, and the event was recognized at the Harrisonburg City Schools Board Meeting by the Superintendent. Dr. Oh plans to run this event every year to encourage more girls to get into STEM. She encourages 9-10th graders to come to the event so that they can attend this event multiple times before they graduate.
