If you had one year or less of a language or want to start a new language at JMU:

Take 101 in the language of your choice followed by 102, 231, and 232.

If you have previous experience with the language:

You must take the placement exam and enroll in the course into which you have placed. If you think you have been placed incorrectly, please contact the department head, Dr. Cynthia Chalupa, at chalupcs@jmu.edu.

If you achieved the Seal of Biliteracy in High School:

You will automatically place into 232 of the language you were learning; contact the department head for a permission number. Speakers who achieved a test score of Intermediate High or above for the Seal should also contact the department head.

If you need a placement exam in a language other than Spanish, French, German, Italian or Russian:

Please email the contact person for that language
or the department head for languages not offered at JMU or the department head for languages not offered at JMU.

Note for Orientation Students following the One Book Checklist:

If you have determined you do not need to take a language placement exam, you can simply skip the FLPE step on the One Book Checklist and go on to the next step. Not having that step checked off will not prevent you from completing the other steps.
