All Bachelor of Arts programs require proficiency in a foreign language through the intermediate level.

If you had no language in high school (or one year or less of a language), or want to start a new language at JMU:

Take 101 in the language of your choice followed by 102, 231, and 232.

You can also do combined 101/102 (in the course 111) and combined 231 and 232 (in the course 212).  These courses are not offered regularly, so plan ahead when making your schedule.

If you have previous experience with the language, take the placement exam and enroll in the course into which you are placed.

If you acheived the Seal of Biliteracy in High School:

If you achieved the Seal of Biliteracy in High School, you will automatically place into 232 of the language you were learning. Speakers who achieved a test score of Intermediate high or above for the Seal, should contact the department head at chalupcs@jmu.edu.

Transfer Credit:
You may transfer in college credit for approved courses that meet the requirements of 101-232.

Education in the target language:
Verify completion of two or more years of secondary education primarily taught in a language other than English (the school does not have to be outside the U.S.)

Placement into the 300-level:
If you place into the 300-level on the placement exam, you can take one 300-level class or complete credit-by-exam at the 300-level to satisfy the B.A. language requirement or to get a head-start on a major or minorCheck
