Alger Hall’s transformation will house the James Madison Center for Civic Engagement, the new Civic Leadership Scholars Residential Learning Community for first year students, and the civic leadership minor in one dynamic building in the heart of campus.

The Madison Center wing will feature a new dedicated entrance, private offices for staff and faculty, a civic engagement library, small conference room, and a grand meeting room. The multipurpose room on the first floor will be the main space for the civic leadership minor program.

The residence portion of the hall will house 42 residents, one resident adviser (RA) and one hall director. The renovation preserves the hall’s historical value as one of the university’s oldest buildings while incorporating necessary updates.

It was renamed Alger Hall in honor of JMU’s past sixth president Jonathan R. Alger who championed civic engagement at JMU. Alger Hall is scheduled to reopen Fall 2026.
