Dr. Silvia D’Amato is an affiliated Associate Professor of Political Science at JMU. She holds a Ph.D. (cum laude) in Political Science from the Scuola Normale Superiore, Florence. She serves as the academic coordinator for JMU's European Union Policy Studies M.A. program in Florence and Secretary General of the European Initiative for Security Studies. She has been Assistant Professor at the Institute of Security and Global Affairs (ISGA) at Leiden University, part of the research groups Terrorism and Political Violence and War, Peace and Justice. Prior to Leiden, she has been Max Weber Fellow at the European University Institute (EUI) and post-doctoral research fellow at the University of Florence. Her work covers main questions of international politics, conflict and security, but she has focused mostly on European security and counterterrorism strategies with a particular interest in the Sahel area. She is the author of the book Cultures of Counterterrorism: the French and Italian response to terrorism after 9/11, and together with Alessandra Russo and Matteo Dian, she co-edited the book International Relations and Area Studies: debates, methodologies and insights from different world regions.
