High-Leverage Practices (HLPs) are a set of 22 essential instructional and collaboration practices that special education teachers—and really all educators—should use consistently to support students with disabilities.
HLPs are:
- Research-based
- Foundational to effective teaching
- Applicable across grade levels and content areas
- Powerful when implemented well and consistently
The 22 HLPs are organized into four domains:
- Collaboration
- Data-Driven Planning
- Instruction in Behavior and Academics
- Intensify and Intervene as Needed
Examples include:
- Collaborating with families and professionals
- Using multiple sources of data to make instructional decisions
- Explicit instruction
- Providing positive and constructive feedback
- Teaching cognitive and metacognitive strategies
