High-Leverage Practices (HLPs) are a set of 22 essential instructional and collaboration practices that special education teachers—and really all educators—should use consistently to support students with disabilities.

HLPs are:

  • Research-based
  • Foundational to effective teaching
  • Applicable across grade levels and content areas
  • Powerful when implemented well and consistently

The 22 HLPs are organized into four domains:

  1. Collaboration
  2. Data-Driven Planning
  3. Instruction in Behavior and Academics
  4. Intensify and Intervene as Needed

Examples include:

  • Collaborating with families and professionals
  • Using multiple sources of data to make instructional decisions
  • Explicit instruction
  • Providing positive and constructive feedback
  • Teaching cognitive and metacognitive strategies
