Due to COVID-19, JMU VITA is launching an adapted version of its free tax return preparation program for 2021 this spring, beginning Friday, February 5 and running through Friday, April 9.

The Free annual tax preparation and e-file service for households with an annual income under $65,000 will function with a safe drop-off and pick-up model, rather than in-person. Clients will schedule a time on Friday evenings between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to drop off and review their tax documents with a JMU VITA volunteer.

After an IRS-certified VITA volunteer prepares the tax returns, they will be ready for “Pick-up” the following Friday between 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. The client will return to the VITA site to review and sign their federal and state tax returns, which will be electronically filed with the IRS and state tax department.

Drop-off times must be scheduled to control the number of people at the site. To schedule a drop-off time, call the JMU VITA at 540-236-8685. The phone will be answered Monday-Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.; if you are calling outside of those hours, please leave a message and your call will be returned the following work day.

Drop-off and pick-up will be at Hartman Hall (JMU’s new business building), 421 Bluestone Drive, Harrisonburg.
