Experience
Early in my career, I served as a Drought Relief Technical Officer with the U.S. Peace Corps in Botswana, where I administered a famine-relief program that constructed more than 800 projects using local labor and distributed food to 150,000 people. Upon returning to the United States, I developed low-income housing in Albany, New York. I then began consulting for nonprofit organizations and local and state governments while pursuing my master’s degree and, subsequently, my Ph.D. at the University at Albany. During this period, I founded and directed the Initiative for System Dynamics in the Public Sector, where teams of modelers developed system dynamics models to address public-policy issues for clients.
I have more than 30 years of experience developing system dynamics models as decision-support tools for local and state government decision-makers. These simulation models have been used to examine issues including HIV/AIDS policy, traffic safety, DWI recidivism, mental health services, infant mortality, tobacco and e-cigarette policy, environmental conservation, criminal justice, fleet maintenance, supply chain management, and simulation-based student competitions. I have also worked in the private sector with Fortune 500 companies and small medical practices. My current interests include developing models to address impaired driving, the global water crisis, and income inequality.
Research Interests
I am interested in a wide range of subject areas and focus on developing formal simulation models to address complex problems across diverse domains. Ideally, I collaborate with interdisciplinary teams of colleagues, subject-matter experts, and students who contribute domain knowledge, while I provide system dynamics and modeling expertise. Together, we work to understand and address complex real-world challenges. I am currently interested in the domains of the global water crisis and income inequality.
