About

Although my degrees are in forestry and geology, I have been a geography professor for over two decades and I have a deep love for the discipline. My primary research involves remote sensing (satellite and aerial imagery), and I have many other scholarly interests, including using geographical techniques to better understand public opinion. I am also working with other faculty members to create a program at JMU for students on the autism spectrum.

Outside of JMU, I actively volunteer at the Rockingham-Harrisonburg SPCA, and serve as the treasurer of the local Quaker meeting. I have two children (one of whom is a college sophomore).

Research Interests
  • Humanitarian, environmental, and intelligence applications of remote sensing
  • Historical aerial imagery
  • Developing algorithms for processing remote sensed imagery
  • Using geographical techniques to understand public opinion, and co-founder of the JMU Geographical Angles on Public Opinion Lab
  • Developing higher educational experiences for people on the autism spectrum (Part of a team starting Project Luminesce, a STEM program at JMU for people on the autism spectrum.)
