 What is the difference between Computer Information Systems and, say, Computer Science?

Traditionally, Computer Science programs focus on the theory, methodologies, and tools used for software development / computer programming. Computer Information Systems sits at the intersection of Technology, Business, and People. Not only do our students gain experience in computer programming during their coursework, but they also explore issues in the analysis, design, and implementation of information systems in modern organizations, gain experience in database technologies, explore security and networking concepts, explore statistical concepts, methodologies, and tools for use in business intelligence / business analytics / “Big Data”, and much more.

 What type of work do CIS graduates from JMU do?

About 85% of our graduates get jobs in Consulting. Of those in consulting, about 20% choose IT Audit positions with accounting firms.

The other 80% that become consultants, go into a broad array of technical consulting. Students normally have more than 2 offers and may choose the type of consulting position they like, ranging from web design, to networking, to database, to scrum master, and many more.

The 15% of CIS graduates that do not go into consulting, have traditionally went into banking or financial institutions (Capital One, Fannie Mae, Freddie Mac, Cambridge Associates, e*trade).
