To apply to the BSN program, the minimum prerequisite GPA is 3.0 and all pre-requisite course grades must be a C- or better. The pre-requisite courses required for application include: Madison Foundations Critical Thinking, Madison Foundations Human Communication, PSYC 160 and either BIO 290 and 290L or BIO 270 and 270L.
Any paid job that you’ve had that is not healthcare related within 12 months of application is considered work experience.

Healthcare experience refers to any work or volunteer involvement within the healthcare industry. This can include roles in administrative support, operations, or behind-the-scenes functions in hospitals, clinics, or other medical settings. Healthcare experience offers valuable insight into how the healthcare system functions and supports the delivery of care. This can be paid or unpaid. If unpaid, the applicant cannot also submit the same experience for community service.
Paid examples include Certified Nurse Aide (CNA), Patient Care Tech (PCT)or Emergency Medical Tech (EMT). Unpaid examples could include shadowing in a healthcare environment or volunteering in a hospital.
For this application Lifeguarding is not considered a healthcare experience but can be included in the certification and/or non-healthcare work experience portions of the application. Applicants will need to complete the Healthcare Related Experience Verification Form and have it signed by their supervisor(s). Community service is defined as, service offered that does not benefit the individual providing it in the form of financial compensation, school credit or otherwise. Common examples are found in the following areas but are not limited to: health care, childcare, education, social services, senior citizen services, recreation, crime prevention, community improvement, housing and public safety. For the purposes of the application, community service must be part of a formal organization (Examples of a formal organization include but are not limited to: United Way, United Methodist Church or local affiliate, SRMH axillary.) Informal experience such as babysitting for a neighbor, providing care for a family member, tutoring a family member or a shadowing experience is not eligible. If the community service is healthcare related, the applicant will need to choose whether to submit as community service OR Health care Experience, but not both.
*A shadowing experience may meet criteria in the Health Care Experiences category.

First-generation college student is defined as someone who neither parent or guardian have graduated from a 4-year college or university.
The applicant would need to be serving on active duty. Dependents of active-duty military members would NOT be considered active duty.
Applicants must complete the Co-curricular Activities Verification Form and have it signed by a student organization leader. Forms should be uploaded as PDF or JPEG. There is a limit to no more than 4, so applicants should choose the ones that they have had the most involvement with. Forms must be signed and dated no earlier than 45 days prior to the application due date.
CNA, EMT and lifeguard certifications are included. CPR or Revive training are not considered formal certifications or professional credentials for the purposes of this application.
Applicants can submit evidence of scholarships or other formal awards. Academic recognitions such as Dean’s or President’s list do NOT count as an award.
Applicants will need to upload proof they are receiving a Pell grant. This can be done by logging into MyMadison>Student Center>View Financial Aid. Applicants should not include any financial information.
As long as the JMU Registrars’ office has received a transcript and awarded the applicant credit for a prerequisite course, they don’t need to send another transcript. However, if an applicant has taken a course at an outside college/university and retaken that course at the same outside college/university, an official transcript must be submitted electronically to Ms. Meadows at meadowra@jmu.edu. *Please note that transcripts that are emailed pdfs or scanned copies will not be accepted.
Applicants will identify if they are fluent in another language. Fluency is defined as: Able to communicate effectively and naturally, speaking and understanding the language with ease and accuracy. It implies a high level of proficiency, where you can hold conversations on a variety of topics, express yourself clearly, and understand nuances of the language. Reading and speaking are at the level of an educated native speaker.
Any sort of healthcare observation or shadowing is considered healthcare experience. If an applicant is an EMT they can include this as healthcare experience as well as certification/credential and work service.
CNA clinical hours can count as healthcare experience, but the timeframe for that is within the past 12 months of application. The Healthcare Experience Verification Form would need to be completed and signed by your supervisor. Forms must be signed and dated no earlier than 45 days prior to the application due date. Keep in mind that if you currently have active certification as a CNA, it should be included in the Certification or Credential portion of the application.
August 31 is the deadline for final grades for the July 1 application cycle, allowing for summer class grades to be finalized. January 11 is the deadline for final grades for the December 1 application. January term courses are not considered for December 1 applicants. Transcripts received after the due date will not be considered.
This is a limitation of the application software. The verifications are placed at the end of the application to assist applicants. Uploading verification forms in order should be the last thing the applicant completes before signing. Be aware that if you navigate backward, you will need to re-upload forms.
Use your legal permanent home address and not your JMU address.
One requirement to apply is to complete one full-time semester at JMU. If you are applying in December, the fall semester counts as your full-time semester. If applying in July, the spring semester counts as your full-time semester.
Also, refer to the Transfer Credit Report in MyMadison Student Center for course equivalencies. Prospective transfer students can use Transferology to determine how their courses will transfer.
