THIS BREAK IS CO-SPONSORED WITH THE COLLEGE OF EDUCATION (COE). ONLY MEMBERS OF COE CAN SIGN UP FOR THIS BREAK

Nestled among the towering redwoods of the Santa Cruz Mountains, YMCA Camp Campbell has been connecting people to nature for over a century. The camp is home to an award-winning outdoor science school that brings thousands of elementary students each year into the forest to explore, discover, and learn through hands-on experiences. By combining environmental education with character development, the camp fosters curiosity, teamwork, and a lifelong love for the outdoors.

During our visit, we’ll serve as cabin leaders for elementary school students attending the camp’s ecology and science field trips. Volunteers will support outdoor lessons, lead activities, and help young learners navigate their week away from home, building confidence, independence, and respect for nature. Along the way, we’ll gain a deeper understanding of environmental education and the vital role outdoor learning plays in shaping future generations.

Participants should be ready to spend full days outdoors, hiking the redwood trails, engaging with students, and helping facilitate camp programs. Patience, enthusiasm, and a sense of adventure are key, as every day brings new discoveries and challenges in the woods.

We’ll stay in cabins with beds (linens or sleeping bags required) surrounded by the peaceful forest. Evenings will offer time to share meals, reflect on the day’s experiences, and enjoy the unique sense of community that comes from serving and staying together among the redwoods.

Join us to empower the next generation of environmental stewards and rediscover the wonder of learning outdoors!
