Break Description
Memphis, Tennessee is a city rich in history, culture, and connection to the Mississippi River. While the river has long been a source of life and livelihood, it also faces ongoing threats from pollution and waste. Living Lands and Waters, a nationally recognized environmental nonprofit, has been working for decades to protect and restore this vital waterway, mobilizing thousands of volunteers to remove millions of pounds of trash from its banks and backwaters. With Living Lands and Waters, we have the opportunity to join this mission and contribute to a healthier, more resilient river system.
During our visit, we’ll head out by boat and on foot to clean up trash from the shorelines of the backwater channels. Each bag of debris removed helps protect wildlife, improve water quality, and restore the natural beauty of the Mississippi. Along the way, we’ll learn about watershed conservation, environmental justice, and the powerful role communities play in caring for shared natural resources.
Come prepared for outdoor service that may involve lifting, bending, hauling debris, and working in varying weather conditions. Teamwork and flexibility are essential, as cleanup projects can shift depending on the needs of the crew.
Evenings will be a time to cook meals together, reflect on the day’s work, and connect with each other as we process both the service and the stories of the river.
