Break Description

Participants at Hobcaw Barony

Interested in protecting coastal ecosystems while uncovering centuries of history? Join us at Hobcaw Barony, a 16,000-acre coastal preserve near Georgetown, South Carolina, where history and nature collide. The property is home to rare species like the endangered Red-Cockaded Woodpecker, plus a mix of pine forests, salt marshes, hardwood groves, and winding tidal creeks. It’s also part of one of the most environmentally significant estuarine systems on the East Coast, making it a living classroom for conservation, climate science, and coastal ecosystems.

Hobcaw isn’t just about the natural world, it’s also a site rich with history. From its roots as colonial land grants to rice plantations to its role as a retreat for U.S. leaders in the 20th century, the land holds stories that students will get to explore firsthand.

During this break, we’ll get to play a role in preserving both the natural environment and cultural heritage of this extraordinary place. We will support projects like trail and grounds upkeep, painting, light carpentry, and assisting in educational spaces like the Discovery Center, all while learning from staff who are passionate about preserving Hobcaw’s unique legacy.

Evenings will be spent at Kimbel Lodge on-site, where we’ll share meals, reflect on the day, and relax together in a cozy lodge tucked into the landscape.

Whether you’re wandering through salt marshes, uncovering stories of Friendfield Village, or lending your energy to conservation projects, this January break promises to be both impactful and unforgettable.
