The 2027 Campus Master Plan organizes future growth into a series of campus districts and development opportunity areas, allowing JMU to pursue development that is phased, intentional, and adaptable over time. The plan is guided by five planning principles:
- Support the Academic and Research Mission: Advancing research facilities and academic buildings that support a rising national research university
- Enhance the Campus and Student Experience: Expanding residential options and co-curricular spaces that foster belonging, well-being, and student success
- Connect the Campus Districts: Creating a campus that feels unified and accessible across all districts
- Improve the Mobility Experience: Developing seamless pedestrian, transit, and transportation networks across campus
- Create a Working Landscape: Ensuring the campus environment supports sustainability and the everyday experience of the JMU community
