2027 Campus Master Plan: Advancing Campus Development
A physical roadmap for The Madison Promise
At James Madison University, The Madison Promise is more than a strategic plan. It is a commitment to students, to our local community, and to the Commonwealth of Virginia. The 2027 Campus Master Plan translates that commitment into a physical roadmap, guiding how JMU grows, builds, and evolves over the next decade and beyond.
Every ten years, JMU develops a Campus Master Plan — a visionary, long-range framework that considers improvements to campus land use, buildings, athletic facilities, connectivity, transportation, landscape, and mobility that shape daily university life. The Campus Master Plan does not serve as a capital construction plan. Rather, it is a guiding tool — a thoughtful, conceptual blueprint that helps the university make smart, intentional decisions as it grows. The plan is adaptable by design, remaining responsive to changes in funding, enrollment, and the evolving needs of the JMU community.
"Putting students and the Commonwealth first is our cornerstone value, and every decision we make — including how we build and grow this campus — must pass that test. When we increase student housing, when we create vibrant spaces where learning, living, and community converge, we are not just building buildings. We are creating the sense of belonging that attracts and keeps our students here, that improves their well-being, and that strengthens our impact across Virginia and Beyond."
