In April 2026 the U.S. Department of Justice released an extension to the compliance deadline for the federal digital accessibility standards under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) Title II. The deadline for “large public entities” to comply with the updated regulations has been extended from April 24, 2026 to April 26, 2027. As a public institution, JMU must also comply with Virginia's amended Information Technology Access Act (HB2451).

While the federal compliance deadline has shifted, our mission remains unchanged. At JMU, digital accessibility is not just about meeting a future legal date; it is about the students, faculty, and staff who need to access our content today.

University units should continue making steady progress toward improving the accessibility of websites, documents, course content, and digital tools to meet existing requirements. This extension provides additional time to strengthen our accessibility practices, refine content workflows, and expand available resources.

Providing accessible digital content remains a priority and is essential to fostering an inclusive environment. These efforts support JMU’s goal of ensuring that all users can access and benefit from the university’s digital resources and learning experiences.

Updates will be shared on this page as additional information becomes available.
