There are three main areas to interact with videos in Canvas: Canvas Studio, Canvas Files, and the Canvas Rich Content Editor. Each of these offer different levels of captioning functionality.
This page provides information about DIY captioning, automatic captioning, and caption files for each of these three areas where applicable.
Canvas Studio
- Create your own captions from scratch.
- This is a great option for captioning YouTube videos that do not have adequate captions.
- Edit automatic captions.
- Upload a caption file.

Canvas Rich Content Editor
- DIY Captioning: There is no native support for creating your own captions or editing automatic captions through the Canvas Rich Content Editor. Please see our list of DIY captioning platforms (including Canvas Studio) or use a captioning vendor to obtain a caption file.
- Upload a caption file.
- Caption files are obtained by downloading them from a captioning vendor or DIY captioning platform.
Canvas Files
This refers to videos that are stored in the “Files” section of your Canvas course.
- DIY Captioning: There is no native support for creating your own captions or editing automatic captions in Canvas Files. Please see our list of DIY captioning platforms (including Canvas Studio) or use a captioning vendor to obtain a caption file.
- Upload a caption file.
