The Graduate School welcomes Dr. Melissa Alemán as Associate Dean. 
Dr. Melissa Alemán joined the faculty of James Madison University in 1998 and is currently Associate Dean of The Graduate School, a member of the Graduate Faculty, and Professor of Communication Studies. Dr. Alemán earned her B.S. in Speech and Professional Communication from New York University and her M.A. and Ph.D. in Communication Studies from the University of Iowa. Dr. Alemán’s research program advances qualitative understandings of communication in aging families, most recently in the contexts of family caregiving and custodial grandparenting. Her work has been published in a variety of outlets, including the Journal of Family Communication, Journal of Social and Personal Relationships, and the Journal of Communication. In addition to her research agenda in family communication, Dr. Alemán’s engaged scholarship and outreach with her colleagues, undergraduate and graduate students highlights women’s leadership on campus and advocacy for gender equity and inclusive academic-organizational climates.

Dr. Stacey Pavelko and Dr. Carol Dudding have recently been awarded a $9,471 grant award for Language Sampling and Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) for Speech-Language Pathologists by the Virginia Department of Education. Congratulations on this award!
Dr. Christy Ludlow has been appointed as Chairperson of the Motor Function, Speech and Rehabilitation Study Section for the Center for Scientific Review beginning July 1st, 2013 until June 30th, 2015. This position requires high competence and achievement in the researcher’s scientific discipline and members are selected based on quality of research, publications in scientific journals, and other significant activities, achievements, and honors. Dr. Ludlow’s participation helps assure the quality of the National Institute of Health (NIH) peer review process and is a highly esteemed position. Congratulations to Dr. Christy Ludlow!
