Substance Misuse Coaching is a unique conversation. It is an opportunity for students to explore their expectations around alcohol, cannabis, nicotine or other drugs, as well as the potential risks.

Coaching sessions are confidential and available to all JMU students. Our team of facilitators believe your opinions and experiences are important and valuable. We believe that you are the expert on you. Together we can discuss if and how alcohol, cannabis or other drugs may fit into your life moving forward.

What to Expect
  • Coaching sessions are facilitated by honest and genuine professionals who care about your well-being.
  • Typically students attend 2 separate sessions during which they have the opportunity to explore their own motivations and patterns of alcohol, cannabis and/or other substance use.
  • Topics of conversation may include expectations, potential risks and your own ideas about how to minimize anything undesirable as a result of substance use.
  • Sessions are typically between 45 and 60 minutes.
  • During an initial session, students are invited to complete a brief online self-evaluation that creates a unique personalized feedback report.
  • Follow up sessions allow the student to discuss what about their personalized report stands out and could be of value to their decisions in the future.
  • Most importantly, you can expect a thoughtful conversation focused on what is important to you.
  • Nicotine replacement options and online resources for continued support may be provided if they are of interest.
  • Referral to additional campus and community resources can be provided, if desired.
What are students saying?
  • “There is something special and unique about this coaching.”
  • It “helped me put a lot of things into perspective.”
  • “I learned so much about myself.”
  • “I had a great experience and felt a lot more confident coming out of it than I did coming in.”
  • “I felt valued, and most importantly I didn't feel judged, rather, applauded for my efforts. It felt empowering to hear how I can make a difference in my own life, and the support provided was just that.”
  • “The charts in my report helped me see myself in a new way.”
