Anne (Annie) Walther currently serves as Associate University Counsel for James Madison University and Assistant Attorney General for the Commonwealth of Virginia.
Annie provides advice and representation to University administration, faculty, and staff. Annie’s primary practice areas are student affairs, student conduct, Title IX, intellectual property, First Amendment, threat assessment, contracts, FOIA/records requests, and other matters.
Prior to joining James Madison University in 2023, Annie worked for Virginia Commonwealth University’s Office of University Counsel. Annie has also served as a Law Fellow for the National Association of College and University Attorneys (NACUA) and in various capacities for both public and private institutions of higher education. Her scholarship has been published by the Brigham Young University Education & Law Journal. She’s also written for the Virginia State Bar’s Docket Call and multiple articles for The University of Richmond School of Law’s Journal of Law & Technology (“JOLT”) blog (e.g., What is “FERPA”?).
Annie has a B.A. in Public Relations from Westminster College, where she received the Chair’s Choice Award for “Outstanding Contributions to Westminster Organizations” and a J.D. from the University of Richmond School of Law, where she served as the Executive Editor for the Richmond Journal of Law and Technology. She is currently pursuing her M.B.A. with a concentration in Executive Leadership at JMU’s College of Business.
