Description
Duties:
We are seeking a patient, energetic, and reliable caregiver for our sweet 7-year-old twins, who are both on the autism spectrum. We are looking for someone who is comfortable providing a structured environment and engaging with children who have diverse sensory and communication needs.
Key Responsibilities:
- Active Engagement: Providing 2-on-1 supervision, play, and safety management.
- Personal Care: One child requires assistance with diapering/toileting. Applicants must be comfortable with this aspect of care.
- Pet Note: Must be comfortable with two dogs and one cat being in the home (no pet care required).
Requirements:
- Experience working with children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or developmental disabilities is highly preferred.
- Patience, clear communication skills, and a kind, flexible approach to supporting children with neurodivergent traits.
- Comfortable with diapering/personal hygiene care for one child.
- Reliable transportation to our home.
- While not required, we would love to find a student who is interested in continuing this role into the 2026-2027 school year.

Our home is located in Weyers Cave, roughly 15-20 minutes from the JMU campus. This is an excellent opportunity for students in the Exceptional Education (EXED), Communication Sciences and Disorders (CSD), or Nursing programs to gain hands-on experience with neurodivergent children in a home setting. We are happy to provide professional references or documentation of hours for students pursuing these career paths.
Salary
$18–$25/hr depending on experience, special needs skills, and flexibility
Hours per week
Variable: 7–15 hours per month during the school year; 36 hours per week during specific summer break gaps.
Specific hours
This role covers childcare gaps when Harrisonburg City Schools are open, but Augusta County Schools are closed. All shifts are 8:00 AM – 3:15 PM. Immediate Dates Needed: -Tues, April 21 -Fri, May 22 -May 26–29 (Tues-Fri) -June 1–5 (Mon-Fri) -June 8 (Mon) 2026-27 School Year: Ongoing care typically required 1–2 days per month (dates provided well in advance), plus occasional evening 'date nights' as agreed upon.
Duration of position
Immediate start for spring/summer dates; high preference for someone available to continue into the 2026-2027 school year.
