Description
Duties:
- Maintain the safety and welfare of the campers through professional relationships and appropriate supervision.
- Maintain an emotionally and physically safe living space for campers.
- Ensure that campers attend activities and are safely under the supervision of fellow counselors.
- Teach campers to know what is expected of them behaviorally, including counseling campers on choices of activities and mediating behavioral issues.
- Enforce health and safety rules for campers, including daily hygiene, medical needs, and emotional care. Participate in the development and implementation of program activities for campers.
- Lead and participate in adventure activities such as hiking, canoeing, caving, rappelling, cooking over a fire, low ropes course, and tent camping trips.
- Lead daily interest groups such as team sports, craft projects, creative writing, nature walks, etc.
- Make necessary preparations prior to the start of the activity; cleans, repairs and returns all equipment after the activity.
- Counselors should be able to lift approximately 50 lbs, endurance to stand for long periods of time, and walk a moderate distance on steep terrain without difficulty. They must have the visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity. Must have the physical ability to respond appropriately to situations requiring first aid and emergency protocols. Be a role model to campers and staff.
- Staff should have high standards of conduct including following all of the staff policies and activity safety protocols.
- Mentor younger staff through supportive relationships and role modeling.
- Maintain positive working relationship with all members on staff.
Requirements:
- Volunteer or professional experience working with children.
- Previous experience working in diverse populations.
- Comfortable participating in the Christian faith elements of the job.
- At least 18 years of age -Able to obtain First Aid/CPR certification (training provided at Alkulana).
- Able to pass staff screening measures including professional references background checks.
