I want to go home
A collaborative pop-up show by ART 105
March 25-27
Duke 1031: Grace Street Gallery
Reception Thursday, March 26, 5:30-7pm
I want to go home is a collaborative group exhibition that reflects the nostalgia and complex experience of leaving home. The artists contributed a toy from their childhood that they still cherish, such as a favorite stuffed animal, and they each constructed a handmade house for it using materials and a process of their choice. These small dwellings act as stand-ins for the personal shelters the students are building for themselves to create spaces of safety, identity, and belonging while away at college.
A winding roadway made of black paper stretches across the floor, its white crayon markings echoing the paths that brought them here and the roads that lead back to the places they came from. Along the walls, photographs from the artists’ childhoods offer glimpses of earlier moments and memories. Together, these elements transform the exhibition into a space that honors the comforts of childhood while sharing the journey toward discovering a new sense of home.
