Students who have already studied Italian in high school must take a placement test that will determine the level at which they may enter the Italian language program. The Italian placement test is not administered on line, so we kindly ask you to contact Laura Cangiano (cangialx@jmu.edu) to make an appointment.

The lowest course in which students may be placed is Italian 109 Accelerated Review of Elementary Italian*, a course that strengthens the foundations on which students will build their knowledge of the language and culture. After completing this course, students go on to Italian 231 (intermediate italian I).

*Italian 109 is a 3-credit course that does not count towards the BA requirement, but can be taken as an elective course
