Alex Marinelli joined the Office of Strategic Gifts on September 2026, having previously served as the Director of Major Gifts for JMU Athletics since 2024.

A native of Hyde Park, NY, Alex first arrived in Harrisonburg following three years at Furman University in Greenville, SC, where he served as the Director of Athletics Development. In his role with the Paladins, Marinelli was responsible for all aspects of the Furman Athletics Fund, amassing $42.9 million in philanthropic commitments over the course of Marinelli’s tenure. Prior to joining the Furman Athletics staff, Alex served as the Annual Fund Coordinator for the 12th Man Foundation at Texas A&M, where he coordinated cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship efforts for the foundation. Marinelli also has prior athletics administration experience at Villanova University, where he served as the Assistant to the Athletic Director from 2019 through 2020. Alex received his Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Medicine from Marist University in 2019, where he also competed as a baseball student-athlete.

Alex and his wife, Alexa, are passionate advocates for James Madison University, and are honored to call the Shenandoah Valley home. In their time outside of work, the couple enjoy the great outdoors, a great meal, and time traveling together. Why JMU: “From the moment our family arrived on campus, we were blown away by the PEOPLE that comprised the JMU community. Though JMU has successfully built a national brand, complete with an elite athletics portfolio, it is obvious to us that the Dukes have found a way to retain their incredible sense of community in Harrisonburg, and beyond. Our family looks forward to connecting with, and contributing to, this special community.
