First-Generation Student Success offers workshops throughout the academic year to help students build practical skills, connect with the campus community, and thrive at JMU. Whether you're looking to strengthen your academic success, prepare for your future career, improve your financial knowledge, or meet other first-generation students, there's a workshop for you.
Our programming is organized into five focus themes:
Academic Success
Supporting students in navigating the academic expectations of college
Workshops and resources in this category focus on developing skills and confidence in areas like studying, time management, class participation, academic communication, and using campus resources effectively. The goal is to empower first-gen students to thrive in the classroom and feel confident in their academic abilities.
Community Building
Fostering meaningful connections and a sense of belonging
These events are designed to help first-gen students build relationships with peers, mentors, and supportive staff. Whether through social gatherings, small groups, or collaborative activities, the focus is on creating a welcoming and affirming environment where students feel seen, valued, and connected.
Financial Literacy
Equipping students with tools to manage money and understand financial aid
This category includes workshops that help students navigate topics like budgeting, scholarships, credit, student loans, and understanding their financial aid. Sessions are designed to be practical, judgment-free, and supportive of students' short- and long-term financial goals.
Professional Development
Preparing students for internships, careers, and life after college
Programs in this category help students build professional confidence and skills. Topics include resumes, interviews, LinkedIn, networking, internships, and exploring career paths. Many workshops highlight first-gen professionals and provide real-life examples of how to navigate professional spaces.
Student Enrichment
Encouraging personal growth, self-awareness, and everyday life skills
This broad category focuses on supporting the whole student, beyond academics and careers. Topics may include wellness, identity, self-advocacy, goal setting, study abroad, off-campus living, and mental health. The goal is to help students thrive in and out of the classroom by offering skills and insights that foster lifelong empowerment.
