The Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a federally grant funded program focused on increasing the college and career readiness of students.
James Madison University is proud to partner with Staunton City School to implement GEAR UP programming to support a cohort of middle and high school students in accessing post-secondary education. GEAR UP with follow this cohort through their progression to Staunton High School and into their first year post-secondary.
Current seventh and eighth graders at Shelburne Middle School in Staunton, VA will access resources and participate in various activities and programs to help with planning for post-high school and the world of work. GEAR UP grant goals include reducing truancy, increasing high school graduation rates, and increasing enrollment in higher education.
GEAR UP programming for students includes tutoring, mentoring, field trips, campus visits, after school clubs, career exploration, college readiness and much more. GEAR UP also engages with families and guardians of students to help navigate the college application process, understand financial aid options, and support with decision-making around the future.
