Annual evaluations are a vital tool for faculty growth, reflection, and alignment with unit and institutional goals. Moreover, accurate and timely submission of annual evaluation materials is essential to maintaining transparency and accountability. The following practices are designed to help faculty navigate the evaluation process effectively, ensuring compliance with university and unit-level guidelines while supporting a fair and thorough evaluation.
- Review and follow the procedures for submission of the FAAP and summary of activities and accomplishments for the previous twelve months.
- Be aware of and follow the Faculty Handbook and unit-level requirements related to the evaluation process, the accurate representation and reporting of one’s work, and the template/format for submissions.
- Meet all deadlines specified in the Faculty Handbook and unit guidelines.
- Maintain records of the evaluation letter and any appeal documents, if applicable.
- Provide accurate, clear, and comprehensive narratives to highlight the content of your achievements and activities.
Suggested Practices
Alignment and Reflection
- Highlight how your work/accomplishments over the previous year align with the university’s mission, unit goals, and your career aspirations.
- As you reflect on your performance, be transparent about your challenges.
- Describe the impact of your service, including informal and/or unassigned service.
Documentation and Preparation
- Document items for inclusion in your summary of activities and accomplishments throughout the year.
- When discussing teaching, indicate whether you adopted a new pedagogical approach or substantially revised a course from a previous iteration.
Growth, Development, and Feedback
- Seek mentorship, professional development, and resources to enhance performance.
- When receiving challenging feedback, keep an open mind. Ask for clarification, if necessary, and pause before responding to your AUH.
- Advocate for yourself using prescribed processes if you believe your evaluation is misaligned with your performance.
