Dennis Lo is an Assistant Professor of Global Cinema in the Department of English at James Madison University, where he is currently teaching Introduction to Film and Global Cinemas. He holds a Ph.D. in Film and TV Studies from the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) with a specialization in the cultural geography of Chinese-language film production practices and communities. He is in the process of preparing a monograph, entitled A Cultural Geography of the New Chinese Cinemas, based on his dissertation research.

His interdisciplinary research on the politics, aesthetics, and practices of global cinemas and medias have been published in seven refereed journals: Film-PhilosophyAsian CinemaStudies in the HumanitiesMediafieldsMediascapeAmerasia, and the Stanford Journal of Asian American Studies. A chapter on the location shooting practices of Chinese-language filmmakers based on 18 months of fieldwork has also recently been published in an anthology, entitled Production Studies, The Sequel: Cultural Studies of Global Media Industries. His work has been presented at 8 conferences and 5 invited talks, including the Annual Conferences of the Society of Cinema and Media Studies, National Communication Association, Association of Asian Studies, North American Taiwan Studies Association, and Conference of the Permanent Seminar on Histories of Film Theories.

Prior to teaching at James Madison University, Dennis Lo has taught Introduction to Film and Introduction to Mass Media in the Department of Communication at the County College of Morris. He has also served for five years as an editor with Mediascape, UCLA’s Department of Film, TV, & Digital Media’s online and peer-reviewed journal, as well as moderated and translated at several events in UCLA featuring guest film directors from Asia.

In his spare time, Dennis Lo is an avid filmmaker and videographer. His creative works explore the multifaceted experiences of place by transnational subjects and include four short documentaries and a feature length docudrama that won critical acclaim for its use of cinematography at the Stanford Student Film Festival.
