Academic Unit Head, Department of Mathematics and Statistics

The Department of Mathematics & Statistics (M&S) at JMU resides within the College of Science & Mathematics (CSM), which also includes the departments of Biology, Chemistry & Biochemistry, Geology & Environmental Science, and Physics & Astronomy. Our 54 full-time and ~20 part time/adjunct M&S faculty members are engaged in teaching and research in the areas of pure and applied mathematics, mathematics education, statistics, and data science.

We seek an AUH with a strong understanding of the national trends in undergraduate education and scholarship in mathematics, statistics, and mathematics education and the future of these fields. The AUH must demonstrate a clear understanding of the importance of data science and the emerging landscape of data technology at the national level, and be able to promote, support and advance the data science initiatives in the department, the college and the university. The AUH will also guide the department in recruitment efforts to increase the number of students with majors in the department.

Director of the Biotechnology Program

The College of Science and Mathematics (CSM) at James Madison University (JMU) invites applications for a full-time director for its Biotechnology Program. The primary duty of the Biotechnology Director is to foster an environment where biotechnology majors can gain the skills and experience needed to have productive careers in biotechnology. In order to prepare the students for a career in biotechnology, faculty from the Departments of Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Engineering, and the School of Integrated Sciences collaborate to provide an interdisciplinary curriculum that combines strong scientific foundations with applied experiential learning. JMU is seeking candidates who are committed toward continuing to build an equitable and diverse scholarly environment where people of all backgrounds can reach their full potential.

Associate Merck Manufacturing Automation Engineer (Elkton, VA)

Description:

This position provides support for the control system software and hardware for the various manufacturing areas at the site. This typically involves managing several challenging projects. The Associate Manufacturing Automation Engineer will be paired with a more experienced Automation Engineer who will oversee their work as well as their development. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to apply their enthusiasm and technical skills as a member of a multidisciplinary team supporting the operation of pharmaceutical product manufacturing facilities. 

Internship starts on January 17, 2022 and extend through Summer, 2022.Requires working 20-30 hours per week during the Spring, 2022 semester and 40 hours per week during Summer 2022.

Responsibilities include:

  • Assist with providing automation support for various manufacturing systems such as Programmable Logic Controllers , Distributed Control Systems and Original Equipment Manufacturer platforms
  • Must be willing to work closely with various site and central groups in order to ensure control systems are designed, implemented and maintained in a manner to ensure manufacturing requirements are met
  • Designing solutions to ensure quality and stability of automation systems through future expansions, replacements, or upgrades.
  • Using technical knowledge to assure the efficient operation of a variety of automated processing and information technology systems.
  • Developing an understanding of Good Manufacturing Practices, safety, and environmental regulations
  • Communicates daily with operation, technical, and quality representatives within area of support through the tier process
  • Periodically reviews automation documents, performs preventive maintenance, and revises or develops automation Standard Operating Procedures.
  • Develops and supports corrective actions associated with automation related deviations/investigations
  • Communicates periodically with immediate supervisor about the status of area of responsibility
  • On the floor trouble shooting support of manufacturing activities
  • Maintains all system life cycle documentation
  • Responsibilities will potentially include providing automation support on various shifts and remote off-hour coverage support for trouble calls.

  • Partner with Manufacturing and Support organizations to develop and maintain a sustainable lean manufacturing environment driven by an engaged workforce.
  • Prioritize, align and integrate use of various tools & strategies to analyze and standardize process, material and information management in support of manufacturing value streams and effectively transfer required mindsets, behaviors and skills into the organization.
  • Partner with the production teams on the shop floor to identify sources & eliminate issues and develop trust through standardized communication tools.
  • Incorporate continuous improvement skills through the framework of Merck Production System, resulting in sustainability & realization of intended people and business benefit.
  • Optimize existing processes to achieve improvements in process quality, yield and efficiency.
