College Level Positions

This 12-month Instructional Faculty hire will have the vision to promote and develop transdisciplinary department and college level initiatives. In addition, this position will support faculty mentorship and reinforce programmatic efforts to engage students in research. The successful candidate will report to the Dean and work collaboratively with CSM leadership including the new Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Director and Student Success Coordinator (search in progress) and with colleagues in units across campus.  

The specific job responsibilities of the Associate Dean will include: Developing or improving existing faculty mentoring programs within the college that complement efforts of CSM units and outside resources, such as the Center for Faculty Innovation; Leading the implementation of faculty-oriented action items in the college’s DEI Action Plan; Assisting faculty in creating career plans appropriate within their discipline; Collaborating with the Associate Dean for Research and Scholarship to assist faculty in capitalizing on external programmatic funding opportunities involving student engagement in research; Supporting faculty efforts to develop new curricula, programming, and scholarship, in alignment with CSM mission and priorities; and other duties as assigned.

As a member of the CSM Dean’s leadership team, this position will advise and support CSM faculty, staff, students and administration in the development and implementation of diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives, as well as initiatives and programming that support the learning of students in all CSM courses. This person will participate in short-term and long-term strategic planning related to student success and DEI initiatives. Collaboration with units on campus such as the Office of Student Academic Success and Enrollment Management and the Associate Provost for Inclusive Strategies and Equity Initiatives to effect change and support student success is expected. This position will report to the CSM Dean and is a 12-month Administrative and Professional (A&P) position.

The CSM Department of Biology seeks an Academic Unit Head with a strong understanding of both the national trends in biology education and the future of the biology field. The Biology Department currently serves over 1000 undergraduate Biology and Biotechnology majors and 15 to 20 Masters’ students. The 53 full-time faculty and 6 staff members are engaged in teaching and research in a broad range of sub-disciplines. Additionally, the department offers a wide variety of courses for biology majors, general education, and health-related undergraduate majors and minors, including a 4-semester, lab-intensive core curriculum. The College of Science and Mathematics, in conjunction with the College of Integrated Science and Engineering, has begun Phase Two of an EDS cohort hire (for information on Phase One, please click here). We hope to fill four tenure track positions in our various academic units, which include Biology, Chemistry and Biochemistry, Geology and Environmental Science, Mathematics and Statistics, and Physics and Astronomy in the College of Science and Mathematics (CSM), as well as Computer Science, Engineering, Geography, and Integrated Science and Technology in the College of Integrated Science and Engineering (CISE).

The cohort hires will work collaboratively across disciplines to develop undergraduate curricula and research programs at the intersection of data science, climate science, and environmental analytics. One or more of the four positions could be teacher-scholar post-doctoral appointments. Additionally, at least two of the appointments will be in the academic unit of Mathematics and Statistics and would be involved in the development of a data science program at JMU.
