THE OFFICIAL LIAISON BETWEEN THE UNIVERSITY AND PHILANTHROPIC ORGANIZATIONS NATIONWIDE, we specialize in building relationships with corporate representatives, foundation program officers, and the JMU faculty. Our department of Corporate and Foundation Relations focuses on creating mutually beneficial opportunities for collaboration and funding.

Part of the Office of Development, we work to promote university priorities as defined by the Board of Visitors, President Alger, Provost Coltman, and the deans and directors of JMU’s colleges, schools, and centers.

Specifically, CFR connects our campus colleagues with private philanthropies and companies by

    • getting to know the promising research and program objectives of university faculty members, administrative leaders, and students;
    • informing philanthropic organizations about research, programming, and outreach activities at JMU that align with private foundations’ funding interests; and
    • connecting corporate giving offices to JMU faculty, colleges, schools, and centers with work matching a corporation’s philanthropic priorities.

We make introductions, facilitate gift and grant making, write proposals and complete applications, conduct funding research to help JMU faculty and staff members discover and secure private funding, coordinate with university accountants and budget officers, and foster meaningful interactions between companies and our faculty members and students. CFR is also the home of Madison Trust annual funding event, which puts individual philanthropic investors in direct contact with faculty and staff members innovating at JMU. Since it began in 2014, Madison Trust has provided $835,275 to 67 worthy projects.

We work with corporate representatives to:

  • Find where company values and mission intersect with university initiatives and priorities
  • Establish strategic partnerships with members of the faculty and staff
  • Create brand awareness among students in related fields
  • Develop a skilled, diverse workforce

We consult private foundations’ program officers to:

  • Deliver grant proposals from JMU that align with the purpose and funding priorities of the potential grantor
  • Ensure that the grantors procedures and protocols are followed carefully
  • Provide all reporting as required and requested

We collaborate with the JMU faculty, staff, and leadership to:

  • Identify gift and grant opportunities (prospecting/research)
  • Present the Madison Trust annual funding event
  • Facilitate meaningful, productive conversations with company representatives
  • Develop competitive gift and grant proposals
  • Navigate JMU’s internal grant processes

In addition to deep understanding of the university’s institutional needs for expendable and endowed student scholarships, endowed faculty positions, and capital projects, our expertise covers JMU’s teaching, research, programs, and public service. This ensures the CFR team can direct prospective partners to opportunities that align with their research and philanthropic objectives.
