We work side-by-side with participating high schools to make sure students, teachers, and districts have the support they need.

Faculty Visits
Each month, two faculty members visit participating classes. During these visits, professors

  • Teach lessons or lead lab activities
  • Work directly with students and teachers on projects
  • Observe instruction and ensure academic rigor
  • Serve as instructor of record for JMU credit

Most teachers enter the program with expertise in science or social studies rather than GIS, so this mentorship keeps classrooms running smoothly and confidence high. This model allows K–12 administrators to place the course where it fits best in their curriculum without hiring GIS-certified instructors.

Between visits, JMU faculty remain closely involved by troubleshooting software or data issues; helping teachers refine ideas into feasible, high-quality projects; and offering guidance on analysis techniques and data sources.

Software
Software is provided free of charge to participating districts under the esri ArcGIS for Schools program. This includes both desktop and web-based applications.
