The Geospatial Semester is led by a team of educators who have been pioneers in bringing geospatial tools into the classroom.

 

Bob Kolvoord
Bob Kolvoord

Bob Kolvoord is an award-winning teacher, curriculum developer and researcher at James Madison University, where he serves as the interim provost and vice president for Academic Affairs.

With Kathryn Keranen, he is the co-creator of the Geospatial Semester and the co-author of Making Spatial Decisions Using GIS (1st and 2nd editions) and Making Spatial Decisions Using Remote Sensing.

He is a member of the NSF-funded Spatial Intelligence and Learning Center and is interested in the impact of geospatial technologies on students' spatial thinking skills. For the past 25 years, he's worked with teachers to bring data visualization tools into K-12 classrooms.

Kathryn Keranen
Geospatial Semester: Kathryn Keranen

Kathryn Keranen has 30 years of classroom teaching experience and was instrumental in introducing GPS, GIS and remote sensing into the curriculum in Fairfax County, Virginia. She is an authorized K-12 ESRI instructor and a member of the instructional team of ESRI’s T3G Institute. Since retiring, she has worked as a private consultant for many groups and universities.

With Bob Kolvoord, she is the co-creator of the Geospatial Semester and the co-author of Making Spatial Decisions Using GIS (1st and 2nd editions) and Making Spatial Decisions Using Remote Sensing.

Geospatial Semester: Katelyn Chadwick

Katelyn Chadwick is the Program Coordinator for the Geospatial Semester and an adjunct instructor at James Madison University. A former high school teacher, she has spent more than a decade helping educators and students across Virginia explore geospatial technology through practical, real-world applications.
