Assistant/Associate Professor, Computer Science
We are accepting applications for tenure-track faculty positions, with an anticipated start date in August 2024.
We welcome applications from candidates with diverse specializations, with a particular interest in those with expertise in Software Engineering, Theoretical Computer Science, or Cyber Security.
Applicants must hold a Doctorate (Ph.D., D.Sc., etc.) or be ABD (All But Dissertation) in Computer Science or a closely related field at the time of employment. Successful candidates demonstrate ability and interest in delivering high-quality undergraduate instruction within the context of a liberal arts university. Preference will be given to applicants who show potential for establishing and maintaining an active, research-focused program that caters to undergraduates. While we primarily seek applicants at the Assistant Professor level, we will also consider exceptional candidates at other academic ranks.
Lecturer, Computer Science Department
We are seeking applicants for a Lecturer position, with an expected start date in August 2024.
Lecturers within JMU's Computer Science Department are integral members of our community and actively participate in decision-making and governance. While the primary focus of the Lecturer role is teaching, our department is a vibrant hub for scholarly activity. Computer Science Academic Unit Head
The new Head of Computer Science will join a supportive leadership team and report to the Dean of CISE. The new Department Head will be responsible for:
- Fostering inclusive workplace and learning cultures;
- Inspiring faculty, staff, and students;
- Managing academic administrative tasks and processes;
- Implementing a strategic vision within the evolving landscape of higher education;
- Representing the department and its programs, both internally and externally (e.g., industry partners, prospective students, academic peers, etc.).
The anticipated start date for this position is July 1, 2024. The position is a 12-month faculty appointment with negotiated tenure and teaching responsibilities.
A Ph.D. in Computer Science or a related field is required. Preference will be given to candidates with an academic rank of Associate Professor or higher with academic leadership experience. We also welcome applicants from technical commercial environments with demonstrated accomplishments in organizational leadership.
Tenure-Track Sustainability Focused Faculty Positions – Geography
We are accepting applications for tenure-track faculty positions, with an anticipated start date in August 2024.
New faculty will teach upper-level courses within their expertise, including the core Physical Geography course.
In addition to strong undergraduate teaching skills, this role expects active scholarly contributions that enhance the Geography program and engage students within SIS. We are particularly interested in candidates with expertise in areas such as biogeography, wildlife/biodiversity studies, landscape ecology, agriculture/food systems, applied/critical physical geography, and water resources/hydrology.
Positions require a Ph.D. at the time of appointment. As part of a sustainability-focused cluster hire, candidates from various disciplinary backgrounds are welcome. Priority is given to those with a Ph.D. in Geography or a closely related field with a physical geography background.
Tenure-Track Sustainability Focused Faculty Positions – Environment
We are accepting applications for tenure-track faculty positions, with an anticipated start date in August 2024.
We seek well-qualified individuals for teaching roles in the ISAT Environment and Sustainability Concentration. Candidates should be able to cover global environmental topics, foundational chemistry, ecology, and air, water, and land pollution. We also welcome those who can teach advanced environmental subjects aligned with faculty expertise, as well as candidates from other areas within the ISAT Program or school.
A Ph.D. is required for these positions, which are part of an environmental sustainability cluster hire. While we expect candidates with environmentally related degrees, we also encourage applications from diverse disciplinary backgrounds. We highly value diverse skill sets and experience, including non-academic environmental work in industries, consulting, government, or non-profit organizations.
Assistant/Associate Professor, ISAT Applied Computing (Tenure-Track)
We are accepting applications for tenure-track faculty positions, with an anticipated start date in August 2024.
Our new colleague will instruct various required and elective courses within the ISAT-Applied Computing curriculum. Courses focus on applying computational thinking to problem-solving, with an emphasis on data analysis, modeling, simulation, databases, knowledge-based systems, web app, and mobile app development. Desirable additional topics include data science, agile software development, python, and data visualization. Candidates are encouraged to engage in course and program-level curriculum design and development and work with students on capstone projects.
A terminal degree in a relevant academic discipline, along with demonstrated expertise, is required. Candidates with a graduate degree and substantial field experience are also welcome to apply.
We are particularly interested in applicants with specializations in areas like Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning, Big Data Engineering, Data Science, Databases, Data Mining, Data Visualization, Data Analytics, Computational Sciences, Software Engineering, and Application Development. An understanding of data ethics is a plus.
