SUBJECT: Important Information About Your Academic Standing and Fall 2026 Enrollment

PLEASE CONTACT YOUR ACADEMIC ADVISOR AND/OR COLLEGE CONTACT with questions or concerns.

NOTE: If you have been allowed to return to JMU through continued enrollment appeal/the re-entry process, you are subject to the terms in your contract letter.

Your Academic Standing

At the conclusion of the spring 2026 semester, you are on academic probation. This status means that your cumulative GPA is below the university's required minimum cumulative grade point average of 2.0.

To review JMU’s academic standing policies, including probation and suspension criteria, visit:
https://www.jmu.edu/acstudserv/standing.shtml.

Fall 2026 Enrollment Information

You are eligible to enroll at James Madison University for the 2026 fall semester. However, students on academic probation are limited to a maximum course load of 13 credit hours. This limit is designed to help you focus on improving your academic performance.
Important points to consider:

  • As you complete more credit hours, each new grade has a smaller effect on your cumulative GPA.
  • A 2.0 cumulative GPA is required for graduation from JMU.

If you are currently registered for more than 13 credit hours, you are strongly encouraged to meet with your academic advisor to discuss adjustments to your schedule.

Deadline to adjust your schedule:
11:59 p.m. on Friday, August 28, 2026

Schedule changes can be made through MyMadison. System availability information and alerts will be posted within the system.

If your schedule exceeds 13 credit hours after the deadline, the Office of the Registrar will adjust your schedule to ensure compliance and notify you of the changes.

Credit Hour Appeal Process

If you believe you have extenuating circumstances that justify enrolling in more than 13 credit hours, you may request an exception.

To request an exception:

  • Consult with your academic advisor.
  • Email the college contact person for your major college to request an exception to the credit hour limit.

Please note that approval is not guaranteed and depends on the formal review of your request.

Financial Aid Considerations
Changes to your academic standing or enrollment (such as dropping below 12 credit hours) may affect your financial aid eligibility.

You are encouraged to:
