SUBJECT: Important Information Regarding Your Academic Standing and Spring 2025 Enrollment
NOTE: If you have been allowed to return to JMU through continued enrollment appeal/the re-entry process, you are subject to the terms in your contract letter.
We would like to bring to your attention important information regarding your academic standing at the end of the 2024 fall semester. You are on academic probation, indicating a significant academic challenge. According to university policy, academic probation is implemented when a student's cumulative grade point average falls below 2.0.
Spring 2025 Enrollment Eligibility and Credit Hour Limit
Despite being on academic probation, you are eligible to enroll or remain enrolled at JMU for the 2025 spring semester; however, to assist you in focusing on improving your grade point average, you may take no more than 13 credit hours during the spring semester. Please be aware that as you accumulate more credit hours, the impact of each grade on your cumulative GPA diminishes. It's important to note that you will need a cumulative GPA of 2.0 or above to graduate from JMU.
If you are currently registered for more than 13 credit hours for the spring 2025 semester, we recommend consulting with your academic adviser to determine which course(s) to drop. The deadline for adjusting your schedule is 11:59 p.m. on Friday, January 24, 2025. Changes can be made through MyMadison, with the system's availability details posted there. Failure to conform to the 13-credit hour limit by the specified deadline will result in the Office of the Registrar selecting and dropping course(s) on your behalf, and you will receive a revised schedule.
Appeal for Credit Hour Limit Exception
In the case of extenuating circumstances, and after consultation with your academic adviser, you may appeal to the college contact person for your major college for an exception to the 13-credit hour limit. Please note that the approval of a credit hour appeal is not guaranteed and is contingent upon review by the college contact person, which may result in denial of the request/appeal.
Financial Aid
It's important to be aware that changes in your academic standing and enrollment level (i.e., dropping below 12 credit hours/full-time enrollment status) could impact your financial aid eligibility. We encourage you to review Financial Aid Satisfactory Academic Progress (SAP) info and reach out to The Office of Financial Aid & Scholarships with any questions regarding how your academic standing and enrollment status may affect your financial aid eligibility.
JMU Resources
We want to support you in improving your academic performance to avoid more serious consequences such as academic suspension. We recommend considering the following resources for the upcoming semester:
Academic Advising: Schedule a meeting with your academic adviser to discuss any necessary course adjustments for the 2024 fall semester. If you need assistance with choosing or changing your major, schedule an appointment with an adviser from University Advising.
Academic Support Resources: Take advantage of the academic support services provided by The Learning Centers (which include the University Writing Center, the Science and Math Learning Center, the Communication Center, and PASS), Learning Success Strategies, the Office of Residence Life’s SLI Resource Center, and individual departments and student organizations. A comprehensive list of JMU academic resources is available at https://www.jmu.edu/learning/resources.shtml.
Office of Disability Services (ODS): ODS is available to ensure equal access to JMU’s programs, services, and activities. For more information, visit the ODS website (https://www.jmu.edu/ods/index.shtml) for additional information.
Self-Care Resources: Take care of your mental, emotional, and physical health by exploring self-care resources offered by JMU, including the Counseling Center, REBOUND, Well Dukes, and UREC.
We understand that this may be a challenging time for you, and we are here to assist you on your academic journey. Please reach out to your college contact and/or academic advisor if you have any questions or need further clarification on any of the above information.
Wishing you a successful and productive spring semester.
