Change or Declaration of Major

Change or Declaration of Major Form

  • Use to change or add a major
  • Use to change or add a minor
  • Use to change or add a concentration within a major
  • Use to change or add a pre-professional program

Adding a Program

Signatures are always required to add any program:

  • Majors:  Department Head Signature
  • Minors:  Department Head or Minor Coordinator Signature
  • Concentrations:  Department Head Signature
  • Pre-Professional Programs:  Program Coordinator Signature (See Helpful Links)

Always check directly with the department or program coordinator to verify any special requirements or deadlines necessary to add a program.

Dropping a Program

Signatures are not required to drop a program. Simply indicate on the form the program you wish to drop by checking the appropriate box.

There is one exception to this rule:  You must always have a degree program (e.g., BBA, BS, etc.) assigned to one of your majors.  Log in to your MyMadison Student Center and view My Major/Programs to verify which of your majors has the degree assigned to it.  If you are dropping a major with a degree, you must get a signature to add the degree to your 2nd major.

Processing Forms

To obtain the proper signature(s) on your form, please verify with the department of the program you are adding.  The department may either keep the form and forward it to the Registrar’s Office or return the signed form to you.  All forms must be received by the Office of the Registrar for processing.  We are located on the 5th floor of the Student Success Center, Room 5300.

Please note:  We guarantee processing within 5 business days of receipt in our office.  During high volume processing times, such as registration, we strongly advise you do not delay in submitting your form.

Difference Between a Double Degree and Double Major

You need at least 120 credits to earn one bachelor’s degree (with the exception of a Bachelor of Music). You cannot earn two of the same degree (Example: Psychology BS and Sociology BS).  You can declare two majors under one degree (Example:  Psychology BS and Sociology 2nd major).  A double degree requires at least 150 credits to graduate, along with meeting the degree requirements for both types of degree (Example: Psychology BS and Sociology BA).  Log in to your MyMadison Student Center and view My Major/Programs to verify your major(s) and degree program(s).  For more information on degree requirements, see Helpful Links below.
