The James Madison University Board of Visitors met Friday, February 8, 2019, in the Board Room of Madison’s Festival Conference and Student Center.
The following is a summary of actions taken by the board and key areas of discussion at the board meeting;
- Approved the Nov. 9, 2018, Board of Visitors meeting minutes;
- Approved committee reports from the Advancement, Athletics, Audit, Academics & Student Life, and Finance & Physical Development and Executive committees;
- Approved tuition and fees for the 2019 summer sessions:

- Approved naming the new residence hall scheduled to open in Fall 2019 for Paul Jennings, President Madison’s personal manservant who earned his freedom after Madison’s death and authored A Colored Man's Reminiscences of James Madison, the first memoir about life at the White House;
- Approved six easements for various construction, road improvement and utility projects;
- Received a General Assembly update from Mr. Charlie King, vice president of Administration and Finance;
- Participated in a discussion of strategic responses to the needs of the commonwealth.
Was told by President Alger during his President’s Report:
- Graduated 778 undergraduates and 158 graduate students during December commencement;
- Received a gift of private stock for the College of Business Learning Complex from 1979 alumnus Steve Smith;
- Has held regional events for the Unleashed: Campaign for James Madison University in Richmond and Atlanta and will hold events next week in Washington, D.C., Baltimore and Northern Virginia;
- Hired Dr. Michael Busing as dean of the College of Business and Dr. Bethany Nowviskie as dean of Libraries;
- Dr. Rebecca Brannon appeared on TLC’s Who Do You Think You Are?;
- President Alger has been appointed to the Virginia Count Commission;
- Justice John Charles Thomas, former Virginia Supreme Court justice, was the most recent Madison Vision Series speaker;
- Barbara Schaal, dean of the faculty of Arts and Sciences at Washington University in St. Louis, will be the next Madison Vision Series speaker on April 1;
- Introduced Curtis Cignetti as the new head football coach.
