The James Madison University Board of Visitors met at 1 p.m. on Friday, January 14, 2000, at the Board Room in Chandler Hall. Following is a summary of actions taken by the board and of key areas of discussion at the board meeting:
- Heard a report from JMU President Linwood H. Rose summarizing the following: the new Mission Statement; SACS committee appointments; the Student Success Center; academic space master plan; Y2K preparation; presidential alumni and development tour; facilities planning and construction; minority recruitment; athletic auction; development staffing and strategies; VPAA position search; Martin Luther King Jr. Day; and budget development.
- Approved a request asking the Virginia General Assembly to allocate JMU an additional $20.6 million in operating funds and another $38.7 million in capital outlay for the 2000-2002 biennium. Funds were requested for the following:
- $26 million for the third academic building at the College of Integrated Science and Technology. The building will house science departments, particularly the physics and chemistry departments.
- $8.7 million to renovate Harrison Hall.
- $4 million to negotiate on the purchase of unspecified real estate near campus.
- $20.4 million to fund 93 new positions and operating funds for those positions. The 93 positions would include 87 faculty positions and six staff positions to support past enrollment growth.
- An additional $230,000 from the state's Equipment Trust Fund for equipment at the second CISAT academic building.
- Approved the following new Mission Statement for JMU: "We are committed to preparing students to be educated and enlightened citizens who will lead productive and meaningful lives."
- Heard a report on educational technologies at JMU. The report was presented by several faculty, staff and students headed by Dr. Robert Kolvoord, associate professor of integrated science and technology.
